SMS (Short Message Service) is commonly known as text messaging. Through SMS you can send quick little messages to anyone’s phone and it is normally cheaper than a mobile phone call.

SMSing
When SMSing on all mobile phones, it allows you to send short written messages of up to 160 characters or about 25 words. It has been found that over one billion text messages are sent each month, SMSing by mobile phone users.

Typing them in Modern phones
With many of the modern phones you are able to send simple pictures within a text message. Recently, many publishers, online providers and games companies have launched alert and gaming services on some of these most modern phones.

In older phones the letters are written by pressing the key repeatedly. E.g. if you press 2 once, it writes an 'A', if you press it twice a 'B' and three times a 'C'. But the modern phones have dictionaries inside them and guess the word you want to write even when you just press the key once, saving lot of your time and effort!

Text Message Alert
You have to 'sign up' to receive Text Message Alert service by dialing a premium rate telephone number to cover the cost to the Company of sending you the messages, or send a simple text message to a mobile number with a keyword such as 'START'.

Alert services give mobile phone users many information, ie., updates on the latest news headlines, sport scores and share prices, the daily horoscope. Some alerts give information services covering everything from music news to the latest stock market quotes, or could be newsflash or a football goal alert!

You have to pay for the messages as part of the registration, if not you will probably be charged for each text alert message you receive. Text Message Games You can play a number of games by SMS as these are very simple one player games, ie., quizzes or basic combat scenarios. Logos and Ringtones Many of the popular mobile phone handsets allow simple customization. You may use SMS technology to receive short musical ringtones or small pictures to replace the operator logo on the main screen of your phone. But, most of these services are now charged for, and you may have to use a premium rate telephone number to pay for the ringtone or logo. So, it's really important to remember that nothing in this world is for free !
